As the founding father (some might say grandfather) of the steel bridge-building competition, Bob Shaw has created this link page to assist and inspire, and sometimes entertain, the student chapters working on the steel bridge competition. I hope you enjoy the photos showing you some of the earliest bridges, some of which weighed over 500 pounds and took hours to build! What a long way you’ve come!
The first competition, a pilot test, was held at Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, Michigan, in 1987. The three competing schools were Michigan Technological University, Wayne State University, and Lawrence Technological University. You can learn more about the inaugural completion in this article (link to PDF) written for ASEE’s Civil Engineering Education magazine.
You may enjoy these photographs from the first three years of competition.
